Welcome to Farmer-ish!

Farmer-ish is a journal dedicated to all things farmer–with a literary and educational slant. This journal is the culmination of my life’s work as a writing teacher, writer, and farmer. In the pages of this journal, you will find coverage for everything from raising chickens to jam recipes to poetry about farming and Nature.

Farmer-ish will is published online quarterly on the Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Fall Equinox, and Winter Solstice. Ultimately, our aim is to publish a print annual at the end of each year on the Winter Solstice.

In difficult times like these, many are finding themselves more interested in growing food, becoming makers, and living more connectedly to Nature and their local farming communities. Our goal is to provide engaging and educational essays and how-to pieces for those interested in doing things like raising chickens, gardening, canning, and sewing. Along the way, we will offer poetry, photography, and creative nonfiction, making Farmer-ish a journal that lives in between farming and the arts–a place we know so well here on Sands End Farm in beautiful Maine.

When my hoe tinkled against the stones, that music echoed to the woods and the sky, and was an accompaniment to my labor which yielded an instant and immeasurable crop.
