Welcome to Farmer-ish!

Farmer-ish is a journal dedicated to all things farmer–with a literary and educational slant. In the pages of this journal, you will find coverage for everything from raising chickens to jam recipes to poetry about farming and Nature.

Farmer-ish is published online quarterly on the Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Fall Equinox, and Winter Solstice. Each year, in the Fall, we publish a beautiful print annual, which features all of the things you know and love about Farmer-ish but in a gorgeous print ad-free book.

As we face difficult times due to climate change, pandemics, and social unrest, many today find themselves more interested in taking a step back, growing food, becoming makers, and living more connectedly to nature and local farming communities. Our goal is to provide engaging and educational essays and how-to pieces for those interested in raising animals, gardening, canning, making, mending, and more. Along the way, we offer poetry, photography, and creative nonfiction, making Farmer-ish a journal that lives in between farming and the arts–a place we know so well here on Sands End Farm in beautiful Maine.

When my hoe tinkled against the stones, that music echoed to the woods and the sky, and was an accompaniment to my labor which yielded an instant and immeasurable crop.

Henry David Thoreau
