Well, I am a little hesitant to write this post, but I checked under Petty just about two hours ago, and she had a little one running around under her. I am hesitant because the first baby that hatched died. Ron found it and buried it and kept it from me, so I was not able to examine it. He was trying to protect my heart, so I can only guess; however, after asking Ron a million questions, it sounds like Petty may have accidentally stepped on it. I have only seen this happen one time, and it happened with a first-time mama.
Ron thinks maybe something was wrong with it, and it just died. That is possible for sure, but usually, the first chick to hatch is strong. It was not stuck in its shell. According to him, the baby was already fluffed. I am heartbroken we lost it, and it sounds like it was doing great otherwise. I think it was Petty.
Of course, there is the possibility she just killed it, which I have never seen happen but have read about. I don’t think that’s the case though because I have heard her purring to her eggs, and when I saw her with the new baby tonight, she seemed very good about it.
So my fingers are crossed all is well in the morning. It’s hard for me to not check on her more, but I don’t want to make any troubles for Petty. I’m hopeful things will be okay, and I’m hopeful that, tomorrow, I will have baby pictures.
Oh, and the baby I saw under her tonight was from Cora’s egg. That means this baby is a Poe great grand baby.
Hooray for Petty! Hopefully there are more healthy chicks on the way. 🙏🤞
Pat, we ended up with six babies! I am over the moon! I’m posting some pics tonight. They are a fantastic mix of cuteness!
Oh you have a fun fall coming up…….6 baby chickens to watch!
