This is Ruby’s baby, and she is absolutely a fascinating chicken. At night, she is not sleeping with her siblings anymore and decided to sleep in the nest box with whomever will let her in. So far, it looks like a lot of people don’t mind her, as I see here snuggled in with a different hen every night. Tonight, she was in a nesting box with Circe, who is molting pretty badly and, therefore, hiding in a nest box at night. I guess she doesn’t mind the baby chicken though.
I was telling Ron about her tonight and then told him I needed help thinking of a name for her. I don’t take names lightly. I feel like they need to somehow fit the chicken and my quirky sense of whatever it is that I have. Plus, we named a melancholy chicken Ophelia one time, after the tragic Shakespeare character, and she died young from a reproductive issue. It was heartbreaking, so I have to be careful with names.
I told Ron I needed something that fit with Ruby since she’s Ruby’s daughter, and he said, “Ruby Tuesday.” I told him you couldn’t have two chickens named Ruby because “rules,” of course, but Tuesday is perfect.
And then I got extra excited because we have one more black chicken without a name from Petty’s babies, and I said, “Oh, it has to be Wednesday for the Addams family.”
I was pleased. Ron seemed pleased. We now have Tuesday and Wednesday–plus Clara, Jacqueline, and Lenore. Now, I’m just going to wait to see on that last one. I’m like 80% sure it’s a boy.
