We use so much honey. I don’t even know how we use so much honey, but I think it mostly goes to all of our breads. We make every bit of our breads from scratch and always use honey in the recipes. Plus, what better treat is there than honey on fresh homemade bread?
As we do not keep bees, we buy a lot of honey. If I can help it, I won’t buy honey unless I can get it directly from a keeper because you just save so much money. Plus, it helps the farmers. But, for the longest time, the closest farm that I could find that would sell honey in large jars was in the Portland area. It’s a bit of a drive, and I have been hoping for honey that is closer to home. The goal is to eat honey from as close to home as possible. I am so happy to report that I found a wonderful organic farm north of Bangor in Sangerville, Maine–Nubik Ranch.
This place is beautiful. It is open, spacious, and has views that will take your breath away. To avoid shipping costs, we drove to the farm to pick up the honey, and when I spoke to one of the owners on the phone, I knew I was going to love her. I was right. When I met her, I found out that she is a chicken lady–like my kind of chicken lady.

And her husband, who keeps the bees, was so kind. Ron has been interested in bees, so he invited us to take look at some of the hives. You could tell how much this man loves his bees–and how much he respects them. He told us about how the bees will just sit and watch him sometimes. Wouldn’t it be cool to see bees just sitting there checking you out?
The honey is the best honey. It’s so much darker than any honey I have seen in years (outside of some Manuka honey I had in a small jar), and dark honey is higher in antioxidants. It also tastes so good. Ron and I both agreed that we haven’t had honey that good since we were children.
Do check them out if you are looking for honey. They also sell maple syrup, which I want to try, and bees, which Ron wants to try. I feel hesitant about getting bees because we are about to have to start traveling more, but one day, I would love to try bees too. In the meantime, I surely lucked into a great place for delicious honey.
PS I realized I might want to add that I was not paid to write about this fantastic farm. They don’t even know I’m writing this. I just want to tell people about a good place to get honey because I have spent a long time looking for really good honey.
