Insomnia

by Judith Zelis

Before I settle into
this morning’s threadbare chair,
I scan the crooked pane
for other
4 am risers:
spot
Rabbit,
  Possum,
    Racoon.
We are familiar,
wordless companions
without fight
or apology
for this hour we keep.
For us,
sleep rests lightly,
lifts swiftly;
what are we to do,
but gather
together
to praise the
first blush of day?
