Listen

by Stephanie Gross

Listen.

You. It’s time.
Can you hear
the songs from
the deafened Beethoven?

He composed in silence
and wrote of hope.

The fires of Yule
burn.
The Millions dip
Into joy.

Because
    He caught the unheard
music
in the face of
injustice,
in the face of
fear,
in the face of
loss.

We too can
Choose a legacy,
Our Ode,

He must have known
A lament, a curse;
Written a cynical notation.

But no.
Fire-inspired
Joy found him.

“Oh friends—no more
These sounds”—
But the magic power—

“All creatures drink of joy
At nature’s breast.”

He wrote.
We sing.
We listen.

It’s about time—
      forwards,
backwards, too.

What shall we leave?
